"The problem of describing to others how members of a remote tribe
think then begins to appear largely as one of translation, of making
the coherence primitive thought has in the languages it really lives
in, as clear as possible in our own. For this sort of translation,
concise dictionaries, with their simple equivalents, are of little use.
If, for example, I report without further comment that some primitive
men speak of pelicans as their half-brothers, I do little more than
offer the reader a form of words which, as it stands in English,
suggests the atmosphere of the fairy tale, or nonsense."( Lienhardt
