イツの各地で発生した反ユダヤ主義暴動、迫害である。ユダヤ人の居住する住宅地域、シナゴーグなどが次々と襲撃、放火された。水晶の夜という名前の由来
は、破壊されたガラスが月明かりに照らされて水晶のようにきらめいていたところにヨーゼフ・ゲッベルスが名付けた」といわれる。→「水晶の夜」
Kristallnacht (German
pronunciation: [kʁɪsˈtalnaχt]), or the Night of Broken Glass, was a
pogrom against Jews carried out by SA paramilitary forces and civilians
throughout Nazi Germany on 9–10 November 1938. The German authorities
looked on without intervening.[1] The name Kristallnacht ("Crystal
Night") comes from the shards of broken glass that littered the streets
after the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings and synagogues were
