マクシミリアン・サミュエルの数奇な人生
Maximilian Samuel, 1880-1943
"Most of the surgeries were presumably performed by the Jewish gynecologist and concentration camp prisoner Maximilian Samuel (1880–1943, Fig. 13), who found himself in a very special predicament and whose role has been judged very differently since. There can hardly be any doubt that Samuel was forced into the interventions. As far as his behavior towards the concentration camp personnel and the victims is concerned, the assessment of contemporary witnesses and historians ranges between the extremes of assiduous collaboration and subtle resistance. Interestingly, it is precisely the testimonies of surviving affected women that attest to his compassionate humanity and willingness to help in the event of complications. On the other hand, female doctors who were also imprisoned regarded him more critically: He was diligent towards the Nazis and what he did was not unpleasant for him. Samuel later died in Auschwitz in unexplained circumstances49."(p.497)
"Fig. 13. Maximilian Samuel, for many years a highly respected Jewish gynecologist in Cologne, was forced to participate in the medical crimes of Carl Clauberg, Eduard Wirths, and Horst Schumann in the Auschwitz concentration camp. The latter conducted human experiments on sterilization with X-rays. The extent to which Samuel collaborated voluntarily with the SS doctors is controversial. Samuel was deported from the notorious French collection camp Drancy to Auschwitz in 1942 and died there under mysterious circumstances in September 1943. Source of the figure: Private property Joe Bradley."(p.497)
