Course Name: Creating an ethnography
Language of the Course: Jap.
Type of Class: Seminar Subject
Course Objective:
These classes consider the design (planning) and implementation of
qualitative research and also consider ethnography (the study of human
culture), which is the final deliverable. The planning of research
design leads to consideration of the specific strategies for the
research method. Therefore, another objective of these classes is to
perform mini workshops on each method and presentations of the outcomes.
Learning Goals:
1. To understand the characteristics of qualitative
methods and to be able to give an explanation to other people (fellow
students) on the differences between qualitative and quantitative
methods and on the advantages and disadvantages of each.
2. To be able to give simple definitions of various
different types of qualitative method and to be able to explain to
others what kind of outcome can be obtained when those methods are used.
3. To learn the qualitative methodologies and how to
write an ethnography based on those methods, to discover various styles
of collaboration in daily life (=collaboration design) and to be able
to propose specific methods for solution from the standpoint of each
person.
Requirement / Prerequisite:
These are participation type classes, so a condition for taking the
course is to attend each session and to actively collaborate with the
other students, who will all be strangers to each other.
Independent Study Outside of Class:
Matters such as the downloading of materials for revision and changes
to the schedule will be notified on the “Qualitative research design
and ethnography” page linked to on the web page below.

Grading Policy:
Comprehensive judgment based on the class participation (60%) and
report (40%) with consideration of the class participation (= spoken
contribution to classes).
Other Remarks:
“Art of Field Research B (Qualitative Study and Ethnography)” is
available as a related class on the interpretation of ethnography.
Taking both courses will lead to more effective learning.
Special Note:
We think that the students will get an incentive that increases their
willingness to learn if they read the syllabus and imagine what the
theme will involve before the classes and gather information in
preparation. Matters such as the downloading of materials for revision
and changes to the schedule will be notified on the “Qualitative
research design and ethnography” page linked to on the web page below.
If special consideration regarding the taking of this course is
necessary due to reasons such as a disability, please consult in
advance with the academic affairs related contact point for the
department belonged to (such as the school affairs section or graduate
school affairs section) or else with Trans-disciplinary Education
Division of Purser Department in the Center for Education in Liberal
Arts and Sciences. In addition, please inform the teacher responsible
for the class at an early stage, such as at the first class.

Keywords: Qualitative research, field work, interviews, narrative, ethnography, research ethics
Messages to Prospective Students:
Related classes that are available include “Art of Field Research B
(Qualitative Study and Ethnography),” which examines the reading of
ethnography that has been produced through qualitative research. There
is also “Theory and Practice of Action Research,” which critically
reconsiders how qualitative research should be performed.

Topic: 1. What is qualitative research?: Meaning, history, characteristics and theory
Outline of qualitative research. Exploring the meaning, history, characteristics and theory of qualitative research.
Topic: 2. Interpretation and understanding using texts: Ethnography and ethnomethodology
Understanding ethnography. An outline explanation of the ethnomethodology created by Garfinkel (reading basic documents).
Topic: 3. Research design: Process design, outcome design
Consideration of qualitative research process design and outco
Topic: 4. The thinking behind field work and sampling.
Some people say that field work is qualitative research, so it is not
directly related to methods such as sampling that are used in
quantitative methods. All you need to understand is that this is a
“mistaken view” and you will be okay!
Topic: 5. What is an interview?: Structured, semi-structured and unstructured interviews
Interviews can be described with “peculiar” adjectives, such as
structured, semi-structured and unstructured interviews. You should be
able to understand the difference between these.
Topic: 6. The themes and problems of narrative and data formation
A narrative is speech. We will consider what sort of processes are used to convert what a person has said into data.
Topic: 7. Focus group interviews and discussion
A focus group interview gathers together related parties to hold
discussions together. Why will discussion on a particular theme provide
data for the problem solution you are working on? We clarify this.
Topic: 8. The collection and analysis of oral data
Oral means what has been spoken. There are a great variety of oral information types and analysis methods.
Topic: 9. Participant observation,
ethnography, audiovisual materials, psychology research methods in the
field
Topics such as participant observation, ethnography, audiovisual
materials and psychology research methods in the field will be
explained.
Topic: 10. Text formation and coding from data
To analyze a text, it is necessary to form text from the data and perform coding. We will learn the basics of this.
Topic: 11. Speech sequence analysis methods
Speech has a time structure. Analysis in line with this time structure is called sequence analysis.
Topic: 12. The evaluation of
qualitative research, problems related to its publication and research
ethics.
We will consider the evaluation of qualitative research, problems related to its publication and research ethics.
Topic: 13. Changes in the meaning
of qualitative research as seen from its history: Computerization, the
Internet, the relationship to quantitative research and the harmful
influence of research management.
As shown in the title, we consider the changes in the meaning of
qualitative research as seen from its history: Computerization, the
Internet, the relationship to quantitative research and the harmful
influence of research management.
