・1910年代後半はWHRリヴァースは民族誌の文献研究に勤し むようになる。この講演は、その文献研究の成果に立ったものである。
・彼は晩年の8年間(1914-1922?)は、それまでの流行の教説(言及なし、たぶん進化主義)を捨てて、文化の伝播説を支持するよう になる。実際に、第IV章はその説明に割かれている。p.vi
