「現代の人類学がどんなことを他に確言するとして も、確信をもって断言できるのは――人類学は折りにふれほぼあらゆることを断言してきたように見えるが ――特定地域の習慣によって変わることのない人間などというものは事実上存在しないし、過去に存在したこともないし、最も重要なことは、本質的に存在しえ なかったということである」（p.63）
