皆さんは、ボストン・ブラーミン（Boston brahmin）という言葉は御存知でしょうか？　ブラーミンって、インドのカースト制度のバラモンの民のことでしょうか？というのが日本の大学教養課程 の学生の解答です。

ボストンのバラモン（Brahmin）つまりブラーミンは、アメリカで最古の名門家族の末裔のことです。ウィキペディア（英語）にもそのような 言及があります。

"The Boston Brahmin or Boston elite are members of Boston's traditional upper class. They form an integral part of the historic core of the East Coast establishment, and are often associated with the distinctive Boston Brahmin accent, Harvard University, and traditional Anglo-American customs and clothing. どうして新大陸の最初の白人入植者たちを、インドのバラモン＝ブラーミンと呼ぶのかは、1860年の「アトランティック・マンスリー」誌の記事 によるものを嚆矢としますが、そのようなお高くとまってという意味以上に、「同質性」を維持しようとしてきたこの人間集団の特性にあるようです。（→ウィ キペディアのお陰で渡辺靖（2004:25）教授の『アフター・アメリカ』での記述よりも実際はさらに古いことになることがわかる）

にも関わらず、150年後のわれわれに、ボストン・ブラーミン（Boston brahmin）なんて東海岸の歴史について肌で感じたことがないひとにいきなり「部族名」のように使われても、という気持ちは拭いきれません。

しかしながら、残念ながら、これこそが、人類学において、非西洋社会の人々の部族が当たり前のように存在するという西洋人の偏見をつくってきた ものに他ならない、鏡像であることは、文化人類学や民族学を学んだ人たちにはよく考えてみるとわかるはずです。
