対抗文化＝カウンター・カルチャー（Counter culture, CC）とは、メインストリームの「文化／文明／秩序」が規定するものに抗して（riot against the grain）若い世代が中心に、それとは異なる文化様式をもって、政治・生活・文化の領域で打ち立てた文化的革命のことをいう。ある社会の下位の集団において保たれている新興文化をサブカルチャー（sub-culture）＝下位文化と呼ばれているが、それが組織だって構成されたものとも言える。

今日においてカウンター・カルチャー／カウンターカルチャーと言えるもののそれは、1960年代のカウンターカルチャー（Counterculture of the 1960s）であり、これは、1960年代から1970年の中ごろまで（スターウォーズ：Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, 1977.はCC運動の実質的終焉を象徴する）である。

アフリカ系アメリカ人たちの公民権運動（African-American civil rights movement (1954–1968)）を皮切りに、市民の側からの人種差別の撤廃、兵役拒否や逃避というオプションを含むベトナム戦争反戦運動、反核運動、環境運動、反公害運動など、共産主義革命とは一線を画する文化革命（中国のそれではない）の様相を示しながら、米国や英国を中心に自然発生的に生まれ、世界の都市の若者、とりわけ、ロンドン、ニューヨーク、サンフランシスコなどを中心に展開した。ヒッピー、ドラッグ・カルチャー、サイケデリック、性革命、前衛芸術、ハプニング芸術、など多様な展開を遂げた。

カウンター・カルチャーの思想運動としての特色をまとめた一人、セオドラ（シオドラ）・ローザック（Theodore Roszak, 1933-2001）の『対抗文化をつくる』（The Making of a Counter Culture, 1969）が、その理想や考え方、思考の特徴を適切にまとめている。ウィキのこの書物の解説は、以下のようになっている。

"The Making of a Counter Culture: Reflections on the Technocratic Society and Its Youthful Opposition is a work of non-fiction by Theodore Roszak originally published in 1969./ Roszak "first came to public prominence in 1969, with the publication of his The Making of a Counterculture"[1] which chronicled and gave explanation to the European and North American counterculture of the 1960s. The term "counterculture" was first used by Roszak in this book.[1]/ The Making of a Counter Culture "captured a huge audience of Vietnam War protesters, dropouts, and rebels--and their baffled elders. Theodore Roszak found common ground between 1960s student radicals and hippie dropouts in their mutual rejection of what he calls the technocracy--the regime of corporate and technological expertise that dominates industrial society. He traces the intellectual underpinnings of the two groups in the writings of Herbert Marcuse and Norman O. Brown, Allen Ginsberg and Paul Goodman." [2]"
