メアリー・ダグラス『自然の象徴たち』は、邦訳タイ トルは『象徴としての身体』である。実際に、身体が私たちすべてに共通するのだが、それを取り囲む環境、すなわち社会状況は非常に多様である。ダグラスは 序文でこう述べる。

The human body is common to us all. Only our social condition varies. The symbols based on the human body are used to express different social experiences. We should therefore start with a principle for classifying the latter [ p. vii] .
