「本リポートでは、ＮＨＫ放送文化研究所が国際比較調査グループ（ＩＳＳＰ）の一員として、2018年10月から11月にかけて実施した「宗教」に関する調査の日本の結果について、過去の調査結果との時系列比較を中心に報告する。結果を簡単にまとめると以下のようになる。（1）信仰している宗教の割合は変わらないものの、信仰心は薄くなり、神仏を拝む頻度は低くなっている。（2）日本人の伝統的な価値観だと捉えられてきた“お天道様がみている。人知を超えた力の存在”“自然に宿る神”といった感覚を持つ人は少なくなっている。（3）宗教に「癒し」などの役割を期待する人は減少している。宗教に危険性を感じる人は、感じない人よりも多い。（4）各宗教徒別では、「イスラム教徒」への否定感が他の宗教徒に比べて高い。日本ではこれまで、宗教について深く考えたことのなかった人も多いと思われる。しかし、改正出入国管理法の施行（2019年4月）によって、外国人材の受け入れが進む中で事情が変わる可能性がある。異なる宗教観を持った人達との付き合いが増えれば、今まで以上に「日本人と宗教」について考えなければならないケースが出てくるかもしれない」https://www.nhk.or.jp/bunken/research/yoron/20190401_7.html.

３）宗教の「癒し」意識が衰退し、宗教は脅威＝危険性と感じる人が増えている、

４）宗教別ではムスリムへの否定的感情をもつ人が相対的に多い

宗教的コミュニケーション（religious communication）［既出］という場合には、そのコミュニケーションの主体が何であるのかということを同定しないと議論が混乱するだろう。まず、（１）ある宗教を信じる個人と個人の間のコミュニケーション、（２）信仰の有無にかかわらず個人が宗教集団や、そのテキストや活動や事件などと関わるという、ヒト〈対〉事物＝事件のコミュニケーション、（３）宗教集団や教団さらには教派イデオロギー間のコミュニケーション（日本語では交流と行ったほうがよいかもしれない）、の間のコミュニケーションが想定される。コミュニケーションとは、２つ以上のエージェンシーの間の相互交流だからである。

しかし、このような言挙げは、「宗教とよばれる普遍的な概念とそれに随伴する行動（儀礼や礼拝実践）が定義でき、宗教学者という人間たちに、分析可能である」ということを前提にしないと、上掲の宗教コミュニケーションがなりたたない、という欠点をもっている（→ウィルフレッド・キャントウェル・スミスの宗教学）。

G・ヴェグナー、J・ヴァイス、N・ルーマン、清水正之、および土方透による共著『世界社会の宗教的コミュニケーション：共鳴の醸成』聖学院大学、2020年は、おそらくシンポジウムの記録と思われる論集であろうが、以下のような構成になっている。
