ロバート・マクナマラの核戦略理論の背景には、ランド研究所（RAND Corporation）のウィリアム・カウフマンの影響がつよくみられる。カウフマン自身も核戦争遂行戦略（nuclear war-fighting strategy）を1971年の個別誘導複数目的弾道（MIRV）の開発と導入にもとづくものとして策定している。（→オサリバン、Ｐ．「核戦略」Ｊ・オロッコリン編『地政学事典』東洋書林、2000年）

■大量報復戦略 (massive retaliation strategy), 1954-

Massive Retaliation, also known as a massive response or massive deterrence, is a military doctrine and nuclear strategy in which a state commits itself to retaliate in much greater force in the event of an attack.

■Assured Destruction Strategy （確証破壊）,1954-

相手の核攻撃によって受ける被害を最小に限定する戦略。核戦力の増強、迎撃能力の向上、シェルターの整備（cf. サムス元・准将とシェルターの宣教）

■Flexible Responce Strategy（柔軟対応戦略）,1961-

ゲリラ戦から限定的核戦争、全面核戦争などあらゆる戦争に対する抑止力としての兵器保有。米国の基本的な核戦略構想の中核をなす。（アイゼンハワーの大量報復戦略への批判）。テーラー

■Damage Limitation （被害限定戦略）,1964-

相手からの攻撃を受けても、そこから生き残った核戦力によって相手に対して壊滅的打撃を与える報復能力をもつ戦略。確証破壊水準と保有能力を算出（例：ソ連の人口の1/5～1/4、工業能力の2/3）

■相互確証破壊（Mutual Assured Destruction,MAD），1965-　

マクナマラによるもので、確証破壊戦略（Assured Destruction Strategy）の改訂版として位置づけられるもの

■戦略防衛構想(SDI)，1983-

戦略防衛構想（Strategic Defense Initiative, SDI)

■（核）兵器のバロック化

バロックという用語を一番最初に軍備に関して導入したのは、ハーバート・ヨーク（Herbert Frank York, 1921-2009）という核物理学者である。彼は元・リバモア放射線研究所の所長で、政府高官も務めたことがある（カルドー 1986:9）。
