☆ヴァ ランタン＝イヴ・ムディンベ（1941年12月8日 - 2025年4月22日）は、コンゴの哲学者、学者であり、詩や小説のほか、アフリカ文化や知的歴史に関する書籍や論文の著者であった。[1] ムディンベはデューク大学でロマンス語学のルース・F・デバーニー教授および比較文学教授を務め、パリの社会科学高等研究院では上級講師であった。[2] ムディンベの著作はアフリカ研究において極めて影響力があると見なされている。特に彼の主要著作『アフリカの発明』（1988年）が顕著である。[4] 彼の著作は、アフリカ知的史を転換させた。それは、彼が人種化されたと主張するギリシャ哲学の支配的な歴史再構築に異議を唱えたからである。ムディンベの 著作がアフリカ研究に与えた影響は、ポストコロニアル研究におけるエドワード・サイード『オリエンタリズム』の影響と比較されることがある。[5] ムディンベは、アフリカに関する言説の基盤となる認識論を批判せずに、批判的アプローチは無益になり得ると示した。[6] 彼は1989年にアフリカ研究協会からハースコヴィッツ賞を受賞した。

Valentin-Yves Mudimbe (8 December 1941 – 22 April 2025) was a Congolese philosopher, academic and author of poems, novels, as well as books and articles on African culture and intellectual history.[1] Mudimbe was Ruth F. Early life and career Mudimbe was born in the Belgian Congo, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As a young man, he joined a monastery, but left in 1962 in order to study the forces that shaped African history. He studied in Louvain (PhD, 1970), came back to Congo, and flew to the United States in 1979 for political reasons. He taught at Haverford College and Stanford University, and was, until his death, Professor Emeritus in the Program in Literature at Duke University.[3] His work has had impact on many disciplines including African studies, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, Linguistics, Literature, and History.	幼少期と経歴 ムディンベはベルギー領コンゴ（現在のコンゴ民主共和国）で生まれた。若き日に修道院に入ったが、1962年にアフリカの歴史を形作った諸勢力について学 ぶため離脱した。ルーヴェンで学び（1970年博士号取得）、コンゴに戻った後、政治的理由から1979年にアメリカへ渡った。ハーバード大学とスタン フォード大学で教鞭を執り、死去するまでデューク大学文学プログラムの名誉教授であった[3]。その研究はアフリカ研究、哲学、社会学、人類学、言語学、 文学、歴史学など多くの学問分野に影響を与えた。
Work Mudimbe's work is considered as highly influential for African studies, notably for his major book The Invention of Africa (1988).[4] His writings transformed the intellectual history of Africa by challenging the dominant historic reconstruction of Greek philosophy which according to him was racialised. The influence of Mudimbe's writings for African studies was compared to that of Edward Said's book Orientalism for postcolonial studies.[5] Mudimbe showed that without critiquing the epistemologies which were the basis of the discourses about Africa, critical approaches can become fruitless.[6] He received the Herskovits Award given by African Studies Association in 1989. Mudimbe focused most closely on phenomenology, structuralism, mythical narratives, and the practice and use of language. As a professor, he taught courses on these topics, as well as on ancient Greek cultural geography. Death Mudimbe died in North Carolina, United States on 22 April 2025, at the age of 83.[8]	死 ムディンベは2025年4月22日、アメリカ合衆国ノースカロライナ州で83歳で死去した。[8]

"What is the meaning of Africa and being an African? What is and what is not African philosophy? Is philosophy part of Africanism? These are the kinds of fundamental questions that this book addresses. V. Y. Mudimbe argues that the various discourses themselves establish the worlds of thought in which people conceive their identity. Western anthropology and missionaries have introduced distortions not only for outsiders but also for Africans trying to understand themselves. Mudimbe goes beyond the classic issues of African anthropology or history. He says that the book attempts an archeology of African gnosis as a system of knowledge in which major philosophical questions recently have arisen: first, concerning the form, the content, and the style of Africanizing knowledge; second, concerning the status of traditional systems of thought.
