ポストモダンとは、「モダン（近代）の後」に来ると いう時間と時代区分と、それを支える思潮・思想のことを言う。ポストモダン人類学は、モダンを支えていた思潮・思想の批判や分析をもとに、ポストモダンと いう時代と思潮が、人間を具体的にどのように捉えようとしていたのかを、人類学の研究方法論をとおして明らかにする研究である。英語における最も早いポス トモダンという用語の初出は、建築用語として1949年である。しかし、社会 思想の用語としてはトインビー『宗教への歴史家のアプローチ』（1956）やライト・ミルズ『社会学的想像 力』（1959）である。特に後者は、現在が過去のものになるという時代と概念区分の到来を 意味する用語としてポストモダンを用いている（"Just as Antiquity was followed by several centuries of Oriental ascendancy... so now the Modern Age is being succeeded by a post-modern period. Perhaps we may call it: The Fourth Epoch."）。この後は、左翼文芸批評誌などの文芸ジャンルとしてこの用語が徐々に用いられるようになる［OEDの"post-modern"参 照］。

西暦12世紀初頭にシュジェール（Suger, ca.1081-1151）修道院長が、サン・ドニ修道院の聖堂（Basilique de Saint-Denis）の建築様式（Gothic architecture）に与えた言葉。サン＝ドニ修道院長シュジェールは，1137 年から 1147 年頃まで行われたサン＝ドニ修道院付属聖堂の改築作業を指揮した修道院長。シュジェールは
