WIRED, ワイヤード，とは奇妙でおかしな「西洋人の世界」を茶化したものです。ウィヤード（ワイヤード）はWEIRD の頭文字をならべた略号（acronym） です。すなわち  Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic の意味です。つまり、（1）西洋の、（2）西洋式教育をうけた、（3）工業化社会の、（4）経済的に豊かな、（5）民主主義を標榜する、人たちです。これ がなぜ、奇妙でおかしなものかというと、非西洋的価値観——すなわちジャレド・ダイアモンドの言う「昨日までの世界（the World until Yesterday）」の価値観——からみると、ワイヤード＝奇妙なことが多いことを茶化す、あるいは真面目にとると、批判する論理ないしは視座という意 味です。

wired のOEDの10番目のbという最後の意味にはこうあります。

 b. transitive. colloquial. Usually with up. To cause (a person) to become tense, nervously excited, or energetic; (also, of a drug) to intoxicate. Cf. wired adj. 6b.
