ＱＯＬとは「生命や生活の質」（Quality of Life）の略語のことで、その人間がどれだけ「人間らしさ」を保っているのかということを示す指標や概念を示す。例えば人間は健康であっても病気であっ てもともに——また仮に「脳死の人」であっても——命が続く限り「人間らしさ」を保っているが、同時にそれぞれの人によって人間らしさの質が異なることが 経験的に知られる。医療や福祉の専門家は、ケアの対象者が健康や病気であっても、それぞれの医療や福祉ケアを受けている時に示す人間らしさの質が向上した ／低下したということを感覚的に知ることができる。これらの質的な情報がＱＯＬである。
例をあげると、がんの放射線治療を受けている人が、病気の進行は食い止められたが、その治療によりひどい悪心に苛まれることは「治療は順調だ が、治療の副作用によりＱＯＬが低下した」と表現する。がん組織が骨に転移すると痛みがひどくなることがあるが、治療には直接には関係がないが、その患者 のＱＯＬは低下したものと考える。この場合、鎮痛剤の処方は「日常生活における痛みの軽減によりＱＯＬの向上を目的とする」ために治療として正当化され る。
生命の質の立場（＝生命の質派）の対立概念は、生命の尊厳の立場（＝生命の尊厳派）である。後者は「倫理学や宗教において、生命や命 （いのち）は、全体性があり、神聖で、それ自体に価値があるゆえに、不可侵性なものであるという思潮や生き方のことをいう（→「生命の尊厳」）。

The World Health Organization has defined Quality of Life as:
'An individual's perception of their position in life in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns. It is a broad ranging concept incorporating in a complex way the person's physical health, psychological state, level of independence, social relationships, personal beliefs and their relationship to salient features of the environment' (WHOQOL 1995).
